To prepare for an emergency
Being able to get out of an emergency situation with your health intact rarely has much to do with what gadgets you have with you. Too many times one has found distressed next to that piece of equipment that would help on just such an occasion.
Instead, knowledge of oneself and one’s surroundings is often absolutely decisive. Something as basic as being able to start a warm fire on a cold day in the woods is something everyone should know! It is also important to know how you yourself function in situations by e.g. fasting and knowing how to do so as not to wander blindly.
